When I work with leaders, my goal is to help them communicate and connect better with their intended audiences. While I tout the importance of sharing their unique stories, developing their emotional intelligence, and serving, not selling, I always come back to three core principles: clarity, consistency, and discipline.

By focusing on these areas, you’ll not only improve your communication, enhance your thought leadership, and bolster your personal brand, you’ll also strengthen your career. Here’s how:

CLARITY

Are you ambitious yet always seem to be spinning your wheels and not progressing professionally? You probably lack clarity.

Clarity is all about focus. And in our chaotic world, where there are endless distractions, that’s more important than ever.

When you’re clear, everything becomes easier. People understand you, what you offer, your value, what differentiates you, how you can help them, and how they can assist you. Clarity helps others know, like, and trust you.

Having clarity also enables you to align your goals with a plan to achieve them—and stay away from the things that can derail you.

The best way to gain clarity is to slow down and reflect on what you want most. Though asking yourself, “What do I want?” may seem like an easy exercise, for some, it can be surprisingly difficult. This is especially true for those who wrestle with fear and insecurities about acknowledging their dreams and for people who’ve never pushed the pause button on their busy lives long enough to give themselves space to do so.

Also, realize that you’re allowed to change your answer over time; what you wanted when you began your career may no longer apply, or you may use this time to pivot and realize that dream you had tucked away for “one day.” Now might be the perfect time to reinvent yourselfChallenge yourself to be open enough to allow new and alternative—and sometimes even better—possibilities to emerge.

But here’s the thing about clarity: it demands specificity, and there is no room for a wishy-washy answer. You can’t make progress if you “kind of” want something. The more focused you can be about what matters most to you, the better.

Once you have clarity, make sure that your actions support your goal. Just because you’re busy doesn’t mean you’re productive. You must make a conscious decision to align your attention with your intention.

CONSISTENCY

Have you ever read about someone online only to be surprised (and maybe disappointed) after meeting them in person or watching them being interviewed because they seemed different? Or perhaps someone has been confused about your values, distinct offering, and what you do?

That’s inconsistency rearing its ugly head.

Consistency is about aligning and maintaining your “voice” and look and feel in all your communications. It’s the way you present yourself, the way you sound, the way you write, all of the visual and verbal touchpoints. So much so that people come to expect—and anticipate—your specific point of view and unique perspective.

The strongest brands understand that consistency—in tone, look and feel, and messaging—is vital. No one would ever mistake Apple with Microsoft because Apple demonstrated how important and powerful it could be to align your internal works with your external messaging, having cohesion and consistency across your brand.

For a moment, think about your core values and competencies versus the way you promote yourself—are they in sync? Would your colleagues and clients agree?

Whether you realize it or not, you send a message to the world about who you are and what you’re about. Rather than make your consumers, customers, and clients guess who you are and what you stand for, make sure to communicate your intended message by maintaining consistency.

DISCIPLINE

It’s lovely to have many interests; it’s terrible when people aren’t clear on your strengths and how you can help them.

Discipline means that you stick with those few areas where you have expertise and avoid veering off course in your messaging, audience, or platform. It means saying no to the things that do not support your professional brand and its offerings. The danger is if you vary too much from this, you might confuse people. And worse, you might lose them.

Perhaps after many years in the corporate world, you’ve decided you’d like to go out on your own. You have an impressive skill set across multiple industries. You’re a sales/marketing/operations/administrative leader who can do it all, right?

Maybe, but likely not very well.

Without discipline, you run the risk of trying to be all things to all people. And doing so lowers your competitive advantage and waters down your offering. Worse, people won’t know what to think of you (if they think of you at all).

Instead, focus on what you do best, and let the other things fade into the background. Promote those one or two areas in your wheelhouse and your expertise in helping others so that your name becomes synonymous with those skills. In this way, restraint can be your biggest ally.

How To Find That New Meaningful Job That’s Waiting For You

Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Reynold Levy, author of Start Now: Because That Meaningful Job is Out There, Just Waiting for You, for LeadersCafe, a leadership development program organized by alumni of the American Express Leadership Academy. The Leadership Academy is a global training program that focuses on emerging, high-potential leaders in the nonprofit and social sectors.

As a business executive, nonprofit manager, professor, trustee, consultant and author of five books, Levy has extensive experience as both a chief executive officer, personal career counselor and mentor to hundreds of leaders (including me). However, this is the first time that Levy has shared his career advice with a broader public – in this case, young emerging leaders in the nonprofit sector.

Start Now argues that the best time to look for a new job is when you are securely settled in another one, and the absolute worst time to look for a job is when you need one. Finding meaningful work is not a hobby or extracurricular activity. It requires building networks of active relationships, disciplined research, self-reflection, deliberate practice, hustle and persistence.

Levy’s recommendations are particularly relevant to the nonprofit sector now. Nonprofits face significant demands as they contend with major societal and environmental challenges, including the current health crisis, racial inequality and climate change. And, the need for strong leadership to help guide organizations has never been more critical.

During the course of our interview, Levy asserted that too many people get stuck in their daily routines. They stop reading, traveling and meeting new people. Their lives become insulated and narrower over time, so when they start to look for another job or more meaningful work, they find themselves unprepared to engage in the kind of networking and information gathering that’s needed to compete.

These issues can be especially present during a global pandemic, but Levy believes that now is actually a good time to expand your networks, reconnect with former colleagues and friends, and reach out to people who might normally be unapproachable. He challenged the young leaders on the call to spend the time that they would normally be commuting to work reading, writing, exploring a new idea or reaching out to a new colleague.

In this regard, one of Levy’s pearls of wisdom is that relationships are like ATMs. You can’t just make withdrawals – you have to also make deposits. These deposits can take the form of personal notes to celebrate someone’s accomplishments, or to recognize a friend’s gift to a charity, or simply to say hello. Never underestimate your ability to helps others, to make a difference, to give to one another.

On the subject of interviewing, Levy asserts that the job of an interviewee is to turn the interview into a conversation. This requires an enormous amount of research in advance, especially about the person or persons who will be conducting the interview. What are their interests and accomplishments? What are three or four things that you want a prospective employer to know about you at the end of the interview, and what are three or four things that you want to know?

Most importantly, why is it that you want this job? This can sometimes be the most difficult question to answer, so you should have one prepared and rehearsed. Try your answer out on a friend or spouse. Do they think it’s persuasive, compelling, unique?

Lastly, Levy admits that finding a meaningful job or career can often be a matter of luck and serendipity. But, being able to seize opportunities that are presented to you can often be more important than the best laid plans. Don’t be afraid to put yourself in different situations with unfamiliar challenges. The best careers (mine included) are usually the result of grabbing an opportunity, not following a well-defined path. Start to find that opportunity now – it’s never too early or too late.

Life is full of Blessings, Count your Blessings

On completing ten years of so-called adjustable life; a couple on their anniversary decided to be together the whole day. Early morning they had their breakfast at a renowned restaurant, been to a shopping precinct, watched their favourite movie in the theatre and in the evening visited a local beach. Both of them sat for a while upon the sand and watched the sun go down. Wife appreciated the sound of waves, the gentle breeze, the changing colour of the sky and every possible little thing that would make her happy. On the other hand, the husband was deeply engrossed reviewing the expenditure of the day, transportation for their return, workload the next day and so on. When the sun completely submerged below the horizon, the wife had the best day of her life enjoying every single minute. On the contrary, the husband had a normal day. Now friends imagine who do you think, made the best use of time? Whether it was the wife or the husband?

The same sunset reflects our life. When the sun sets on our life, just envisage how much time we have enjoyed life to its fullest, appreciated things and how much have we spent reviewing the past and planning the future. Just as people are ordained to take birth on this Earth once so is to die once in-between birth and death there is so-called life. Don’t ruin your life thinking about the past and then about the future. We have to live in the present and life will be meaningful based on the decisions we make in the present. We are not blessed to have a second, third or even fourth life so that we may compare our decisions. Make the best possible use of it instead of repenting when the sun is set. Live life as if there is no tomorrow. Spend added time by doing things you truly love and enjoy, with the people you treasure. Value every single moment, but one vital thing; don’t let it be ruined by worries about the future.

Don’t live a life of illusions, try to be practical and accept whatever is given to you. Learn to contend and foremost don’t compare your life to the others. When you learn to be practical there is no question about what happened or what might happen.

Lastly, make a note that one cannot live life to its fullest if he is not willing to give something back. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to part your funds, even by being compassionate about other people’s concerns mean a lot.

Guide a person who is facing hardship, try to create a solution to a person’s suffering and you will not only be remembered as the person who truly made the most of your life, but also as the one who enabled others to make the best out of their situation as well.
